  IRC Basics ..
What is an IRC Channel?

#Politics is a channel (a virtual room) on EFnet IRC. When you enter our channel you may engage in live political discussion with others from all over the United States, Europe, Canada Asia and other foreign countries.

People from all political persuasions are welcome. We have no political affiliation and no specific political viewpoint. We have  an open forum and you are free to join into any discussion taking place. Please accept this as a personal invitation to join our channel. We would certainly like to have you visit us and hopefully, become a regular.

If you want to install your own software ..

The first thing you will need to do is to download the appropriate software that enables you to connect to IRC. The software you use to connect to IRC is called your "client."

Windows:  The best client program is mIRC .    You can get mIRC here,
Mac, os9, mac osx:  SNAK can be found here.
Mac classic, mac osx:  IRCLE can be found here.
Shell account *nix:
     BitchX can be found here.
     IEpic can be found here.
     ircII can be found here.
     Xchat can be found here.

  Chat Lingo ..

We would like to explain some things that are peculiar to IRC. If your comment is directed to a particular person in the channel, always start the post with their nick. Otherwise nobody will know who you are talking to. For example, if you want to direct a comment to Joe, type something like this:
Joe, it won't be long before we are cloning human organs for transplant.
Faces are frequently used in posts. A smiley (:-)) is often used to greet someone in a friendly manner. Posts to the channel can sometimes appear harsher then intended, so it is a common practice to soften a sentence with a smiley. Again, we have an example below.
Joe, that response was utter nonsense! :-)

There is a language used which is unique to IRC and is often used to save keystrokes. It is basically a convenience and some use it more than others. Following are some common ones used in #politics:

:-) happy face IMHO - in my humble opinion
:-( sad face BRB - be right back
;-) winking face BBIAB - be back in a bit
LOL - laughing out loud WB - welcome back
ROFL -  rolling on floor laughing NP - no problem
LMAO - laughing my ass off K - okay
BTW - by the way RE - short for (re hello) or hello again

In any case, if you don't know what it means .. just ask.

Spelling and punctuation are not strictly observed and pointing these errors out, is considered lame. Also, do not type in caps, use colors, or special scripts when posting to the channel. In #politics, these actions are considered rude. Better you should emphasize something by enclosing it like *this*.

Posting to the channel over-and-over, taking several separate lines of text, is called flooding. Color, aciii art and wav files will not be well received. If you are looking for Sex you came to the wrong place, and if you participate in any type of behavior that is non-productive and distracting to the channel, you will be warned by a channel op (operator) to quit.   A channel op is designated by an @ beside his/her nick.  #politics also utilizes VOP's (Voice Operators) and HOP's (Half Operators).  Their names are announced as you enter the channel.

I hope you enjoy coming to our channel and that you will become a *regular* visitor.

Sincerely,

CometBaby
